Fifty Shades Review

First of all, who isn’t reading the series Fifty Shades?
This could be the result that you’ve picked it up due to the buzz, curiosity or boredom. Now I’ve read it and most likely you will too.

Reading this series felt like a graduation of reading the Twilight series due to the fact that the author who wrote it originally wrote it as Twilight fan fiction.
I can identify all the characters in Fifty Shades to those in Twilight; tweaked, more in-depth and interesting but definitely the same formula. Who wouldn’t use a formula that turned out to be so widely successful and now Fifty Shades is sharing the same popularity. It works.
I liked the Twilight saga very much and even if the writing is a bit poor in Fifty Shades, I’ve found myself wrapped in storyline and its characters.

*Spoiler alerts*

Fifty Shades of Grey: During the first bit of the book, I eased myself in thinking this is a pretty typical storyline. Billionaire, introverted, authoritative, drop dead gorgeous Christian Grey has taken a liking to average, intelligent, younger, Anastasia Steele. Whoop…..well that is until he announces he wants her to be his Submissive. Huh? Yes that’s a term for S&M sex. I am not going to go into detail there but feel free to Google it which I had to do for many terms in the book. Now I’ve read Harlequin before so there wasn’t that shock factor in there for me but again the connection with the characters and their reactions kept me intrigued.
I enjoyed the fact that this novel was not rushed. It was a story with 400 pages with an ever slow-moving pace between two characters just starting to be interested in one another and that’s what I liked best. When I finished, (knowing there were two more) I felt content finding out what was in store for these characters.
Yes, I quickly tired of Ana the way I tired of Bella. Why? We are tired because we can relate to her in ways that sometimes she is insecure, whiney and naive.
Yes, I fell in love really fast with Christian the way I did with Edward. (More for Christian though *smirks*). Why? We love him because he holds characteristics in which you would want in a man. Protective, witty and so desperately in love with you.

Fifty Shades Darker: Now this book got more interesting as action started to occur. I mean in and out of the bedroom which was pleasing to a reader. Favourite phrases I picked up in this book were “Laters, baby”. “Stow your twitchy palm”, “Vanilla sex”, and “Kinkery f**ckery”. That’s what stood out for me was this book was raw. There is no proper editing and it seemed to stand out from other books.  I especially enjoyed the witty email banter exchange as it made me laugh out loud a couple of times. Ana is intelligent as is Christian so I can envision them having conversations that I could not see between Bella & Edward. Again, the book went at a good pace. The storyline itself wasn’t that interesting as it posed no real threat but because of the handful of characters, money and sex, it was entertaining.

Fifty Shades Freed: Now I was a bit disappointed with the book for the first half. I wondered, what happened to my characters? It felt like they were no longer the people they were in the first book but turned completely vanilla. Although I do feel that in any series, the authors always save the last book to do as much explaining of characters. history and situations as they can (IE. Hunger Games: MockingJay) and that is what E.L James tried to do. Fine. I got a bit tired of the scenes as they seemed to be ones I’ve read in the other books and the wording hasn’t changed much. (IE. Oh my fifty, poor fifty!) Yawn.
The second half of the book was much better due to some change in events and revelations from characters. Again, this was a long book and it had a good pace. I am happy with the ending as it left me with no loose ends and no ”what if’s?” as so many books are trending to do nowadays.
I especially enjoyed the bonus section where we get to read into Christian’s thoughts (as with Edward’s Midnight Sun) and desperately hope they would someday release the trilogy with Christian as a narrator.

Mmm….Christian Grey.

Puerto 12.

A vacation is always good.
A vacation where you can reunite with your long distance boyfriend? Even better.

It’s been a week-ish since I’ve returned from Puerto Vallarta & the vacation withdrawals are just starting to subside. I finally got use to paying for stuff again! You’d think saying goodbye would get easier but it never does.

For my 25th birthday, I found myself going to Mexico once again to celebrate. Sun, food and booze - can’t complain.
An even more important occasion to celebrate was a wedding. I’ve never attended a destination wedding but now that I have, I can say it’s wonderful! It’s not just that one special day you get to celebrate your love with your family & friends but all week-long.

Here’s another one of my infamously long vacation blogs:

Sunday May 06 2012 -
I can never sleep the day before a trip, who can? The mind is just racing either from excitement or fear that you’ve forgotten something. The most difficult part is always the waiting game at the airport. They really should create more entertainment there, it’d be a money-making machine! Anyhow as we finally boarded the plane, I was impressed with the service that we received. We flew with Sunwing Vacations and was offered complimentary onboard movies, champagne, full meals and hot towel service. Not too shabby.
As we arrived in Puerto Vallarta, the anticipation begins. Immediately it is already hot and humid.
I spot the boyfriend and it’s like time goes still where I am just drinking in the sight of him as we’ve been a part for too long now. Our greet is brief but I try not to be greedy as I know we will have the rest of the week together.

The shuttle has taken us to our resort Dreams Villamanga. It is rated a 5 star resort with good reviews on Trip Advisor. We were welcomed with our key cards and a Mimosa (no wrist bands!). The room itself is gorgeous just like the photos. King size bed, couch, tub, shower, double sinks, tv and a private jacuzzi on the balcony.
**Bathroom & room are only separated by half a curtain. Best room with someone you feel comfortable with.
The resort boasts 3 pools, a beach, 5 restaurants, gym, spa, multiple bars, one lounge, and outdoor activities – excellent.
The first night we had our first taste of the buffet (aidos good eating habits) and enjoyed ourselves at the SkyBar located at the top of the resort building. It was a very relaxing vibe and I suppose the alcohol contributes to that feeling. Though we did discover that the resort is more catered to ‘families and couples’ as the bar does close early (1AM) and loud noise is not tolerated. Wonk wonk.

Monday May 07 2012 -
First day on vacation and we all know it starts with a champion’s breakfast! We ordered room service and had the delicious breakfast on the balcony. The jacuzzi we tried the night before on the balcony was awesome except that it does take a while to fill (15 minutes) so plan ahead! After breakfast, we decided to walk around and start becoming familiar with the surroundings. We ended up at the beach where I got Henna done by a beach vendor, $10 for a butterfly!
We discovered you can borrow equipment from the Entertainment team like mattresses, volleyballs, skim boards etc. A great thing about the pools and beaches was there was a lot of space. You didn’t have to fight anyone for a chair or reserve seating. On the beach there was a lot of activity to people watch, such as Parasailing rides.
Instead of eating at the buffet all th time, we decided to try the restaurants that were offered. For lunch, we visited Oceana which had Mexican/Western food. It was very chill and the food was delicious; this has become my favourite place to dine at the resort but it does take some time to receive the food.
For dinner we tried Portofino, which served Italian cuisine. It’s very fancy shmancy and it required a dress code. This was my least favourite of the restaurants and we only dined here once.
As the SkyBar was becoming a frequent night hangout, I can say I really enjoyed the atmosphere but the downside is more often than not the seats were moist…due to humidity? I don’t know but you’ve been warned.

Being on vacation…rocks. When I return I want to be able to retell what I’ve done and that’s where excursions come in. Sunwing had a promotion that if you purchased 2 excursions, you received the 3rd one free. That is a great deal especially since each excursion costs roughly $90.
After we booked up our excursions, we ventured into town. 12 people sharing a taxi was a $40 ride which took about 30 minutes. The sun was beating and there was lots to see.
I found that the streets were tidy with vendors, entertainers and many tourists. We visited churches, flea markets and misc. boutiques that was so very different home.
*It is all about haggling, do not purchase at first offered price!

We returned to get ready for our Pub Crawl. Sungwing had this special for $59, a visit to 4 clubs, open bar and no cover fee. The night started young at 8pm and lasted until roughly 2AM.
It was organized well and I felt safe visiting all the clubs that were doors away from one another. Each club had a different theme (cowboy vs buddhas?) and the music was current/upbeat as were the crowd. It was a very fun night and I think I was the only one the bus that got “sick” but very kindly they pulled over for me. HA. Excursion rating 8.5/10.

Wednesday May 09 2012 -
After yesterday’s late night, we had to get up early this morning for our first excursion. What was I thinking booking it this way? After a shower and a buffet breakfast, I was good to go. This excursion was the Offroad Adventure. The attitude and vibe that the guides give off start the day in a fun way. Our guide’s name was Juan Carlos. He was amusing and knowledgable. We rode off in a Unimog, a four-wheel drive open truck that seats 10, which was a very rough ride. Hence the “offroad”. At times I was flung out of my seat and swaying this way and that over bumps (thank goodness for seatbelts and handles). After the ride, there is a nature hike which you are educated on trees, creatures and etc. (VERY COOL) We make our way to the town, farms and eventually Sayulita, surfer’s beach. This was a treat for me as we had a delicious lunch by the beach and had time to just enjoy the beach and observing the surfers. A downside to this is the beach vendors who are constantly approaching you every few minutes to purchase from them. On our ride home, we were taught how to drink tequila properly and learned some toasts. Excursion rating 7.5/10.

Happy Birthday to me! I felt wistful waking up. I realized that there is a lot to me that I need to learn, improve and explore. It seems obvious I know but also the dawning was a big neon sign.
I started the day with a bike tour that the resort offers. You sign up and head out with an Entertainment leader; each day they bike to a nearby place. Today we were going to visit the Zoo. It was neat to travel outside the resort just on the bike. The morning heat was just starting to rise and it made the bike ride enjoyable. The Zoo wasn’t spectacular but it was free and I was really more there for the bike ride.
Afterwards I had an appointment at the spa to get my hair done. Along with your service, you are offered to use the Spa lounge which is exclusive and features private saunas, hydro pools and etc.
Then for the reason why we’ve all flown to Mexico….the wedding.
I’ve been to a lot of weddings but none as breathtaking as this one. The factors of the ocean, beach, sun and intimacy were quite overwhelming. The bride was beautiful, I cried during the exchange of the vows and the atmosphere was memorable. Weddings is the act of two people committing their lives to one another and having their friends and family witness their love. The thought of that moves me and I wish the couple a very happy life together.
For my birthday, I received a very special gift…..my first watch. Yes I’ve had watches before, very cheap night market watches but not one that is truly mine that I wanted to keep forever. Now I do and I am happy because I feel like it’s my first grown-up gift.

Friday May 11 2012 -
I awoke to thinking we haven’t had as much time as I’d like to do NOTHING. We’ve been busy and I figure this is the day to hang out at the pool and work in a tan somehow? We had buffet breakfast to which I was surprised when the staff went beyond for me. I’ve taken to having toast, nutella and peanut butter for breakfast but no chocolate was offered today. I was pouty and asked for it, they could’ve easily said they didn’t have any. Yet one of the staff went in the back and dished out a bowl for me. Totally made my morning!
For the next four hours, we frolicked in the pool, drank all yummy drinks (our favourites now being Mojitios, Sangaria, Pina Coladas and Tequila Sunrise), tanned and got free  express massages (you have to tip).
I discovered my love of Ceviche, must eat whenever you are in Mexico and the joy of not doing anything. I started reading the Fifty Shades of Grey book (full review on that later) and realized I was getting sunburnt. WAY sunburnt.  I tried to do damage control with Aloe Repair but it was too late for me. I looked like a lobster and was sensitive to touch. Ugh.
Tonight’s excursion was Rythms of the Night. It started with a beautiful two decker boat ride to the cove Las Caletas.
**The boat ride is 20 minutes & the combination of sea sickness and free alcohol can be overwhelming. Sit at the bottom level of the boat should this occur.
Upon docking, it feel’s like you are on Survivor. The cove is lit in a pathway of torches and you are greeted by the islanders and their musical performance. We are ushered to the buffet dinner that overlooks the water and is candlelit. The food was DELICIOUS. Very fresh and rich. After dinner is when the show begins.
As you are seated, you are impressed by the spectacular stage and that when you look up can see all the specks of shiny stars that you cannot see at home due to all the city lights.
The show plot was not that interesting but the acrobatics and dancing were enjoyable even though it was short. The boat ride back was entertaining as the staff was energetic and humorous. I did not like that we had to find our own way back from Puerto Vallarta Adventures but our resort was close-by and a taxi ride only cost $5US. Excursion rating: 7/10.

Saturday May 12 2012 -
We had planned an excursion for this day, Outdoor Adventure  hosted by Puerto Vallarta Adventures. I was iffy about it due to the fact it was technically our last day and we’d be away all day. Boyyyy am I glad we went! We started the day with a huge buffet due to the fact we knew we’d be away from free food for a while. (Advice #1). Oh and also use the restroom as there won’t be a clean/available one for the next few hours (Advice #2). We started off on a boat ride and it was nothing like the boat yesterday, this was a speed boat. I had to hang on for dear life. The sights were amazing and with the wind in your face, you felt like you were on an adventure. About 20 minutes in, we arrived at an island where we rode the Unimog (not as rough as before) to the destination where we would meet our next transportation. Mules.
Why I really picked this excursion was because I always wanted to ride a horse (not ready yet) so Mules (slow horses)  are the next best thing.
We mounted our mules and to be honest, I was surprised how scared I was. This animal beneath me has its own mind, who knows what it can do?! They taught us to make kissy face sounds to encourage the mule to keep moving, steer the reins left/right for direction and yank a little and say WHOACHICA to slow it down. The trek was uphill, downhill, narrow paths and I survived! I would do it again, after the initial bond, you start to enjoy the ride.
Next part in our adventure was Ziplining. There were 13 ziplines in total and the difference between this excursion and the Canopy Top one I did in Cancun was it had water rappelling.
Ziplining is always nerve-wracking at first but once you zip the first line and you get the shot of adrenaline, it becomes exhilarating. The staff was super energetic, fun, supportive and most of all they made our group feel very safe. After the standard ziplining, they showed us the water rappelling. We had to climb backwards down the waterfall and have them dunk us in there! Wear a bathing suit underneath your clothes (Advice #3).  It was definitely an unforgettable experience and the photos they took turned out great! You can purchase 1 photo for $15 or all for $29 (on CD and 1 free print, obvious choice). The ride back was long and we raced back to catch the sunset at our resort. (Super gorgeous). Excursion rating: 9/10.
Our last night and I was just so burnt (skin wise)! We dined at El Patio (Mexican cuisine) and had drinks at Sky Bar to just relax, unwind and soak in the last of our trip.

Sunday May 13 2012 -
Departure day. The first thought is always, “where did the time go?!” Check out was at 12 and we tried to prolong it as much as possible. The resort was gracious to let us stay past our check out time to still enjoy the foods, pool and entertainment. We spent our time at the hammocks and enjoyed the last of our mexican foods.
Overall resort: The resort is beautiful and very well-kept. I recommend it for families or those who are on honeymoon. Yet I was disappointed that many of the staff could not carry on a conversation when asked basic questions regarding questions the resort. The food was not as good as I thought it might be for a 5 star but the service from the servers made up for that. The drinks were inconsistent from one bar to the next on quality but otherwise you received it in a quick manner.  I would not return to another Dreams chain but I would recommend it.

End note………..I’d like to go another vacation please and OH my skin has just started healing.

Go ahead, be bold.

As my 25th birthday looms closer, I panic a little.
This is normal, is it not? Part of the reason for my panic is  because I realized I’ve deviated from my ‘timeline’.
You know the one you created for yourself at very early teenage years where you are sitting around with your friends boasting that “…by the time I am 25 I’ll be (fill in the blank).”
I had quite the timeline with the things I had hope to be accomplished by now…..that’s not happening.

Perhaps my ideals were unrealistic, I didn’t monitor time closely, or simply I fell off track. Regardless, I am quite disappointed. Yes I’ve achieved other things that weren’t on the time line that were noteworthy but it’s time to regroup and focus. Many people say ‘Life’ gets in the way and we simply don’t have time, effort or means to achieve the things we want. Bollocks I say to that.

25 is quite the milestone to celebrate, it signifies the end of ‘young adult’ but simply just adult.
I think this time around I will be putting pen to paper and creating a hard copy list of this time line and to motivate myself by looking at it a few times a week to ensure no time is lost.

Similarly, Bucket Lists are popular too. I haven’t created one before that might be a good idea for the next post. I read other people’s lists and it seems we all have one thing in common: we want an unforgettable experience.

We’ll see how bold I will commit myself to be.

LDR – Realization

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted about LDR. No – it’s not over.
I find it interesting when I share with others I am in a LDR and I receive a skeptical look or they ask me how it’s going.
I think most people are optimistic in the beginning and support you but they eventually think it’s not going to work out.
After all, how could it?
That’s the conclusion I’ve come to realize; LDR’s do have a potential to last but there has to be a light at the end of a tunnel.
Eventually the couple has to compromise and realize it is a short-term situation as it’s not meant to permanently be this way.
In my opinion, LDR’s seem to be more intense due to the commitment the couple has to make to one another. When the decision is made to be fully commited, you have to take into account what the other person is sacrificing to be with you.
It will eventually come down to, are we ready for this?

LDR – First Visit

“Missing someone gets easier everyday because even though you are one day  further  from the last time you saw them, you are one day closer to the next  time you will.”

You’ve been hearing me whine on how much I miss my boyfriend and the agonizing time away from him. I finally decided to do something about it.
I jumped on a plane to visit him. So simple right?
**I checked Expedia periodically to find the best flight; finding seperate flights were sometimes cheaper than round-trip. Also purchase through Airmilesshops.ca to earn those points for the purchase.
The days following up to my departure, I just couldn’t believe that I would once again be with him and didn’t allow myself to get excited until I got on the plane.
I got in late Thursday evening and wasn’t expected to be piccked up for awhile but as I was reading my book, he appeared.
To admit….I was quite nervous. Why? Just because so much time has been put between us.
Will he think I look the same? Will our new lifestyles mesh? Will it be awkward to hug? Will we just fall back into our rythm?
All those thoughts went out the window when he took my hand. Cornfest, I know.
The weekend was short and sweet. I forgot we had to Spring Forward and that I’ve lost an hour, I felt jipped.
It wasn’t a vacation, we didn’t see anything or go anywhere special but I had an amazing time just being together.

I really understand why people say, ‘Live everyday as if it were your last’ – just because those moments are so precious cause from the moment we saw one another it was a countdown to when I’d have to leave. Now I am home again and this time wasn’t quite hard as the last knowing we were strong enough to make it through the first time.
So the countdown begins all over again….

Apps that run my life

As an Iphone user, it seems the most asked question would be, “What Apps do you have?”
For the longest time, I had an Iphone and used the basics such as Facebook, Camera+, Skype etc.
Recently, I’ve begun to learn to fall in love with my phone again. It’s amazing how a new screen protector, case and wallpaper can give the illusion of having a brand new phone.
Nowadays I am more active in downloading Apps to utilize my phone properly and to keep myself entertained at all times! (Isn’t that the wants of my generation?)

Okay so here are my top Apps I always have open now:

WhatsApp Messenger: It is an app that serves as FREE text messaging. This is most useful as the bf and I are long distance and we do not want to pay for long distance text messaging! This app is AWESOME because not only is it free, it works as instant messaging/email. This includes all media: picture, audio, video and messages that can be sent in a nanosecond. This allows for much text messaging frenzy.
Downsides to this app could be the weird ‘Online & Last Seen’ as status, it’s a bit confusing and useless. As well, it eats up data of course vs text messaging. Android users are receiving this App for free whereas Iphone users have to pay $0.99.

Instagram: Currently this app is available exclusively for Iphone users and it really showcases the quality of the Iphone camera. This app is beautiful and simple. As Twitter serves the need for those who want to update their status frequently, Instagram serves those who love posting pictures! In 2 steps you can choose different filters for your photo and post! Followers can view, like and comment. I like this app because it’s so visual. I can see the foods, the places and events people are posting and no other words need to be said! Recently, Instagram linked itself to Facebook and Animoto making sharing just that much easier! Username: tovanessa

Google Voice: Google is a giant in many things. Although I think their Google Circle has failed a bit, they do offer many services that excel. Google Voice is one of them. In search for more long distance relationship aids, Google Voice helps. The user signs up for a Google Voice #. If I am in Canada, I get assigned a Canadian # which I call and then connects me to the US # I want to contact. This eliminates ‘long-distance charges’ because technically you are calling a local #. Yes? I’ve researched it and I cannot see a flaw on it so far. To be safe I’ve been calling on wi-fi and after 6pm which is my free time to chat but so far so good!

Scrabble: Yes I know it cost $. $2.99 to be exact. And yes I know I can play Words with Friends for free but there is no contest. Scrabble rocks. It has no ads, lag time and it’s the official proper game! I am on this constantly whether playing with my friends or random opponents. The interface is clean and appealing to the user. As you are playing in an intense game, you can also chat with your friends as well and hold multiple games at once. If you are going to download this app, play me:  Username: o1goodgirl.

What apps do you have that are your favourite? What do you recommend I download?

LDR – Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day, may your day be filled with love, hugs and kisses. xo

Today is J & I’s 2nd Valentines Day but we are a spending it apart. We designated a day in March when I will be visiting to celebrate then but I find it not completely necessary as everyday is a celebration of love, is it not?
I didn’t want  Valentine’s Day to pass without him receiving a little token of my appreciation so he remembers someone thousands of kms away is thinking of him.
I sent him a package on Thursday that was suppose to arrive for Tuesday, but surprisingly the postal service was speedy and he received it on Monday.
The package consisted of:
01. Candies: (Hershey Hugs, Strawberry Marshmallows and Chocolate hearts) that had a note attached “Eat these when you miss me”
02. Photo: A picture of me that had a note attached “Look at this when you really miss me”
03. Plane ticket: Money + a generated airplane ticket with a note attached that said “Use this when you really miss me and you cant humanly stand it anymore!”
Use this website if you are interested in creating your own: http://omatic.musicairport.com/

I was recommended to use Animoto for quick slide show productions and now I am loving the high quality and creative videos it produces. This is the one I created for the boyfriend.
JV1024 – VDAY.

I love you. I can’t wait to see you. You will always be my Valentine.

LDR – Trust

As with any relationship, an important factor is trust.
When you are involved in a long distance relationship, the trust factor is highlighted, underlined and bolded.
If you don’t have it, it could spell trouble and unhappiness for all the days you are a part slowly eroding your relationship over time.
Trust makes everything work.
It makes us confident that the person we are with regards our heart in the highest standard and would care for it.
It makes me happy to wake up in the morning knowing I love you and you love me & we would never deem anything important enough to jeporadize that.
Is Trust consistent? Unfortunately, no. It’s tested time and time again.
It is a never ending progress of building blocks that is stacked through time with our honesty, communication and the way we account for ourselves.
To Trust sometimes….is to love blindly.
Let’s continue building this; Let’s put the ‘us’ in Trust.

LDR – A weekend IN

A typical weekend that J & I use to have would include things like making dinner (him cooking), heading to the movies, running errands, checking out new activities or whichever came our way.
This is our second weekend apart and we’ve been having online dates. It’s actually funny because I knew we were going to embark on this and I found myself dressing up for the occasion.
Mum: Where are you going?
Me: Nowhere, why?
Mum: You are dolled up a bit to be staying in.
Can you blame me I want to look decent for the boyfriend?
This weekend we didn’t get a chance to watch a movie but instead we studied together. We spent five hours helping each other out with homework, chatting occasionally for breaks and just hanging out all the while we get face time.
Strange isn’t it?  We both remarked it felt oddly satisfying to find an alternative that works. Who knows what crazy things we’ll come up with next?

In other areas, I mailed him a letter by snail mail and it was received in 3 days! Not bad, right?  The whole “Dear John….”

LDR – Creativity

As we dive into our relationships, the creativity simmers down. We save it for special occasions such as anniversaries or birthdays. We figure that since we see our partner so often that they should know how much we love them by our touch and the things we do for them. Of course that all goes out the window when you are in a LDR.
We have to start getting creative with how we express our love and grow our relationship. A big thing my boyfriend and I like to do is watch movies. We’d do a double feature and it’d be a great stay-in night. He came up with the idea that we both watch the same movie at the same time while we talk on the phone. Creative? I think so!
Our first attempt, we watched ’Another Earth’ (not recommended). It was trying at first trying to get it going with the exact timing but when we did, I quite enjoyed the experience!  We still could chatter about our thoughts of the scenes and in the end if felt like we did watch the movie together minus the cuddling of course.
I recommend wearing headphones in one ear for watching the movie as it may echo and your ear could get hot holding the phone for a lengthy period of time.
As the days go on, I know we will have to start looking into other ‘dates’ we can go on together in the cyber world. Love ftw!
